In 2023, Temu became one of the most downloaded apps in the United States in a matter of months. The premise — a marketplace connecting buyers directly with manufacturers in China, cutting out every layer of retail markup in between — isn't new. What Temu did differently was the shopping experience: polished UI, aggressive pricing, a return policy that actually functions, and shipping times that don't require calendar planning.

I was skeptical. Deep discount marketplaces have a long history of delivering disappointment in a box. I started with low-stakes travel accessories to test the waters, and my experience has been more nuanced — and more useful — than I expected.

How Temu Actually Works

Where Temu Performs Well

Travel accessories are the sweet spot. Packing cubes, cable organizers, luggage tags, compression bags, travel-size containers, small tripods, phone mounts, and lens cleaning kits all perform well. These are products where the quality bar is relatively low, the materials are simple, and the function is straightforward.
